Cycling Active editor Matt Lamy took the unenviable task of finding the best value bike between £500 - £1500. Five bikes were selected; Sensa Umbria, Hoy Sa Calobra .001, Cube Agree GTC, Forme Axe Edge Comp and the Defy 1, but only one could take the victory - step forward the “aluminum wonder“…..
Matt firstly commented on the Defy’s perfect balance, “every little bit as comfortable as you could ever hope an aluminum frame to be, yet it still inspires thrills in the turns, while being supremely stable and safe” this is due to the revolutionary compact design frame and the Extremely lightweight ALUXX SL framesets featuring high-performance strength-to-weight ratios, plus the Giant P-Elite C Wheelset providing constant stability throughout the ride.
The Shimano 105 gearset also gets a mention - a fantastic option at the price point - as it “plays its part in installing utter confidence in the drivetrain - it really is the default option when we talk about quality road bikes, with every change swift and blip free”
To end, Matt summarised the Defy 1 - “Fun, safe, sprightly, relaxed, think of any two incongruous words when it comes to bike performance, and the Defy 1 can effortlessly embody them“.
The Defy 1 scored 92% overall, beating the Hoy SA calobra and Sensa Umbria Sora Special (both 89%) to take the victory.
